Why mental health awareness matters
Thursday 21stFor those of you who know me, my last 3 years have been a series of admissions in an out of hospital including ICUs. I've undergone multiple neurosurgeries and have had extensive time off work. I've also struggled significantly with a change of role, a change in my ability to work and a significant change of self worth.
I make no secret that I've struggled significantly with my mental health and we're it not for the support of my beloved family and close friends, I would probably have ended things when I was at my lowest point in life at the end of 2021.
I've had a lifetime love of cars and Motorsport and being told that I can no longer partake in one of my hobbies was a massive setback - the only real hobby and enjoyment I knew was suddenly in the realms of impossible and coupled with my change of vocation and setback in recovery, followed by further diagnoses including 2 parathyroid tumors and subsequent surgery, my outlook on life is now totally different. I've learnt to appreciate the little things, to appreciate every opportunity to spend time with family, to travel, and most importantly to take many steps back and look at the bigger picture.
I've been extremely fortunate in life to have the support of my wife and children, as well as generous colleagues and friends. This fundraising event is a first ever for me in terms of participation but hopefully not the last as I feel that I need to start paying it forward and be appreciative of all the opportunities and chances at life I've been given.
Getting behind the wheel for The Distinguished Gentleman's Drive
Thursday 21st On Sunday, September 24th 2023, I'll be taking part in The Distinguished Gentleman's Drive. Together with thousands of classic car enthusiasts around the world, I will be raising funds and awareness for prostate cancer and men's mental health for the charity, Movember.Before the dapper day, I'll be looking to raise as much as possible for the cause, to help men around the world live happier and healthier lives. With men's chances of developing prostate cancer later in life increasing, and one man dying every minute by suicide, we must do all we can to prevent more men from suffering.
This is something that affects us all and together, we can make a change. Please give what you can.
